Table of Contents
When you first step into an empty van, it’s hard to imagine that this bare metal shell could one day be transformed into a cozy, functional camper. But like any great project, it all starts with a solid foundation. In the case of van life, that foundation is quite literally the floor. Building a campervan from the ground up requires attention to detail, starting with insulation, flooring materials, and a layout that maximizes both comfort and practicality. Let’s dive into preparing the floor. Everything from soundproofing and insulation to selecting the right flooring materials. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or a first-timer, this series will show you how we approached the floor installation and hopefully get you started on turning an empty van into an adventure wagon.
Soundproofing and Insulation
We started off simple with There’s a lot of opinions on the internet about what you should use to insulate your van floor. A quick search and you’ll find recommendations such as Polyiso Ridgid Board, XPS Rigid Board, Reflectix, and plenty of other options. It really depends on your budget, time, and personal preference. We decided to use the BedRug/VanRug as our floor base. For $299 it perfectly fits the Promaster floor and as an added bonus provides a perfect template for cutting the baltic birch plywood. Definitely the more costly option but it saved a ton of time.
